Get to know the benefits of implant dentures, the “magic” is in the design!

At Sky Dental, we know a thing or two about dentures. After all, our dentists, Drs Cristiana and Flaviu Oltean practice boutique dentistry. They get to know their patients from Littleton and beyond very well. In understanding their needs, preferences, goals, lifestyle, habits, and other factors, Drs Oltean can design new teeth that complement different aesthetics and different lifestyles.

Implant-supported dentures

An alternative to conventional removable dentures, implant-supported dentures are made up of a denture base with overlying prosthetic teeth and gums that are stabilized in the mouth with dental implants. The implants themselves are small posts made from biocompatible materials such as titanium or zirconium. In the months following the placement of implants, they naturally fuse to the rest of the bone in the jaw. Once the process of osseointegration or healing is fully completed, the prosthetic teeth are connected to the implants. In this manner, the implants function like tooth roots. They hold the replacement teeth securely in the mouth.

Also called “overdentures,” implant-retained dentures typically feature small attachments that allow them to snap onto the implants. In turn, the denture relies on the “roots” in the jawbone for its support and stability – just like natural, healthy teeth! With conventional dentures, the denture base relies on either natural suction or denture products such as adhesives. These traditional dentures require ongoing relining, rebasing, replacement, and adjustment to conform to the changing shape of the mouth and tissues over time. Overdentures, though, are not “high maintenance.” They can last for a long time without adjustments. The “magic” is in their ability to strengthen the bone in the jaw. Since the force from chewing is transferred directly from the prosthetic teeth to the “roots” implanted in the jaw, the supportive bone stays strong and healthy! The structure of the face remains unchanged.
