What is bone grafting? How this preparation sets your implant-supported teeth up for long-term success!

Many individuals in and around Littleton can benefit from our expertise in implants at Sky Dental. Our dentists, Drs Cristiana and Flaviu Oltean have the onsite capabilities to precisely plan, position, and support the long-term health of replacement teeth that are “rooted” in the jaw by implants. They also have the technical skills and the technologies to address many complex cases and to offer sophisticated treatment options.

Notably, a bone graft may be necessary for some patients who desire implant-supported crowns, bridges, or dentures. The implant provides a strong foundation for the prosthetic teeth. However, the implant itself requires a strong foundation of healthy bone. The bone in the jaw can quickly shrink, especially among those individuals who do not replace their missing teeth promptly. This process of bone loss is called “resorption.” Without treatment, the results of bone resorption only become worse.

The process

We can build up lost bone in the jaw. This procedure is called bone grafting. We can use a graft, or donor bone tissue, to augment the area of the jaw that has deteriorated due to resorption. There are many donor sources. We can discuss your options for treatment, which may include using tissue from your own body or from synthetic sources (derived from natural minerals). We place the donor tissue or graft precisely. All of this is done to thoroughly yet gently numbed treatment sites. In addition to local anesthetic, relaxing sedation may complement this procedure – for your utmost comfort.

As with all procedures at Sky Dental, we are transparent about what to expect before, during, and after treatment. We provide thorough details on what to watch for afterward and how to care for your mouth.
